What to do

Grocery shopping is easy, with both the small towns of Romsey and Lyndhurst just a short drive from our accommodation. Slightly further away (5 miles) there is the city of Southampton. A wide range of tastes and appetites are catered for with Chinese, Thai, Italian and Indian restaurants and takeaways, country pubs and fish and chip shops all within 5 minutes drive. Alternatively there is a lovely village pub well known for offering enormous meals at very reasonable prices a mere 10 minutes walk away.

Local Attractions

There are many places to visit and things to do and see in the local area. With its wide variety of landscapes and wildlife the New Forest is a wonderful place to explore either on foot, on horseback, on bicycles or by car.

The cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester are only ½ hour drives away, and just beyond Salisbury is Stonehenge. The old market town of Romsey with its magnificent Norman Abbey, and Broadlands, the family home of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten is also only 4 miles away.

Alternatively why not take the ferry from Lymington over to the Isle of Wight for a day trip?


The New Forest Centre is an essential part of your visit to the Forest. Set in the heart of the National Park in Lyndhurst, you'll find a fascinating Museum, visitor information centre, gift shop, library and Exhibition Gallery with friendly staff to answer all your questions about the New Forest and how to best enjoy it.

National Motor Museum, Beaulieu - Set in the heart of the New Forest, discover the many delights that one of the UK's leading Tourist Attractions has to offer. It's a guaranteed great family day out with many attractions to discover in acres of beautiful grounds. The National Motor Museum has over 250 vehicles telling the story of motoring from World Land Speed Record Breakers to Formula 1 racers. Exhibition highlights include the Top Gear 'Enormodrome' which recreates the feel of the Top Gear studio. Included in your visit to Beaulieu is entry into Palace House, home of the Montagu family since 1538, and Beaulieu Abbey with its exhibition and film of monastic life.

Longdown Activity Farm at Ashurst - Fun for all ages with hands-on activities every day - small animal handling, bottle-feeding calves and kids, duck feeding. Indoor and outdoor play areas. Tea room and farm produce shop.

Marwell Zoological Park - is set in 100 acres of beautiful Hampshire parkland and has over 200 species of animals - including many rare and endangered ones.

Paultons Park - a theme park offering a family day out with over 50 attractions and rides included in the admission price - a must for all ages


Walking: either walk the local footpaths or take the car into the forest and explore.
Horse riding: from one of the riding stables in the New Forest.
Fishing: coarse fishing 2 miles, and trout fishing 4 miles.
Cycling: along the cycle tracks in the forest. If you haven't brought your bicycles, there are cycle hire shops in both Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst.
Golf: Golf at Paultons Golf Centre only 1 mile away, with the New Forest Golf Club and Bramshaw Golf Club to name but a few within a few minutes drive.
Swimming: Swimming pools and leisure centres in Romsey and Totton.
